Netflix and Sleep: A study on the influence of Binge Watching on sleep quality

At the Annual Meeting of the DGPuK division “Media Use and Media Effects”, which was held in Würzburg in January 2020, we presented first findings from our research on Netflix use and sleep. Previous research has suggested that binge-watching, but not regular TV use, has a negative impact on sleep quality. It was unclear however if this effect is driven by different content, or by viewing intensity. The results of our study suggest that Netflix users sleep quality decreases after watching three episodes of a series in a row, but not after watching one episode. Thus, the cumulative use of several episodes in one sitting seems to have a negative effect on sleep quality.
